Slate Digital Virtual Bus Compressor Review

It's here! It's here! The next best thing! Well, maybe not, but it definitely will make your music sound AMAZING. From analog tape machines to modeling the nuances of analog channels, Slate Digital has captured it all making it easy to add the vibe and depth of analog to your digital recordings. Adding to his already highly sought after plug-ins, VBC (Virtual Bus Compressor) is nothing short of amazing.

Slate Digital Virtual Bus Compressor
The Slate Digital Virtual Buss Compressors Plug-In comprises three singular, amazing sounding, analog modeled dynamic processors that are ready for program material including full mixes, mastering, drums, group mixes, and more. Will work on all of your stereo material.  Every nuance of analog compressors has been captured; including the exact nonlinear characteristics of their transformers, tubes, VCAs, amplifiers, phase, harmonic distortions, and timing; it's all here!

I've had a chance to dig in to the plug-in just a little bit and it sounded amazing on everything that I tried it on! Literally everything! Sounds get beefy, fatter, warmer and more open with VBC. Imagine what you could get with VTM, VCC, and VBC! Oh' the analog vibe. (laughs)

The plug-in at first appears to be one huge compressor, but, it's actually a three-in-one plug-in that can be used separately on whatever sources you choose to use it on. The first of the three is the FG-Grey.
FG GREY
FG Grey is based on a very famous British-style bus compressor that has been used on countless records across genres by engineers all over the world. It's punchy right off, and quite frankly sounds amazing. The transformers in the compressor that was modeled actually had some things tweaked so that it beefed up the low end. So you know what that means? Oh yes. This is your go to for the beef. Stereo Synths, Synths Basses, Drums? Beef them all.

The Second of the three modules is the FG-Red.

FG Red is modeled after a Red 'faced' Compressor that is used by engineers all over. It's also known for it's distinct punch and drive. This module is the only one of the three that has a knob dedicated for drive.

That's right control how hard you drive the inputs and transformers right from the modules 'drive' control. I'd like to think of it as one of the golden features of this compressor because it add's something special just like in the virtual compressor collection (seen above) That drive knob does it! It adds character and vintage vibe in a way that other 'competitors' just haven't matched. Here is a video that shows a few examples of the VBC in action.

The last but certaintly not the least of the three modules is the FG-MU.
FG-MU from VBC
It's tube-y, it's warm, it's fluffy, it's open; everything you want in your tube compressor. It's actually a hybrid of a couple different tube compressors and man do they know how to choose them! It's warm but not overly done. This compressor is like a well cooked steak; this compressor is golden on pads, and drums, and mix busses. You can't really get much better than the FG-MU if your looking for big and warm. It's definitely a "big warm hug" type of compressor.

So my favorite? Ahhh, If I have to pick one, it's FG Red. Why? Simply The "Drive" Knob. It's the only of the three plugins that have it. In my opinion it's the more aggressive of the three. Can't hear it? Sure, I agree that the differences can be subtle. Almost unnoticeable for the untrained ear.
The point? SD VBC is amazing as expected. Everything that SD makes is on point, and gives the digital world a reason to stick out it's cyber pecs, and not worry about all the supercilious eggs heads that just simply, hate digital.

The VBC is at a price right now of $199! That's three world class compressors for $199. You can't even get some companies to sell you ONE for that price. P
